Our mission

Weaving together the lifecycle, from soil to soil.

Every fleece begins its journey in the soil. Shaped by the upland heather and moorland to the grasses such as ryegrass leys in the lowland, the rain that beats down steadly, and the hands that shear it each summer. Our mission is to connect this fleece with the designers, makers and brands who will give it new life. Together we are building a traceable British wool supply chain strong enough to last, that returns the fibre to the soil at the end of its life.

How do we do this?

Our British wool consultancy, every step from farm to finished piece

Sourcing British wool is rarely straightforward. Navigating shearing seasons, scouring minimums, spinning specs and mill lead times all shape what's possible, and the knowledge you need is scattered across a fragmented industry. We bring it together, and connect you with the right people at every stage. We think of ourselves as the matchmakers for British wool.

We offer tailored day or project support to:

Brands and designers

building sustainable, ethical, onshore fashion and interiors collections

Universities and colleges

bringing British wool into their teaching

Farmers

reaching the makers who'll value their clip, and pay fairly for it

Why explore British Wool and why now?

Brands and designers, this is for you.

British wool is an age-old fibre, one that has been cultivated in Britain for thousands of years. Throughout history, wool has been championed as a regenerative, durable and biodegradable fibre, shaped by a region's specific landscape, and steeped in culture, heritage, and knowledge.

Yet British wool, a fibre that regrows every year from sunshine, water and grass, is today worth almost nothing to many of the farmers who grow it. If you want to build collections from wool grown across the British Isles and Northern Ireland, you're in the right place.

The revival is working. Help us keep it going.

Jeremy’s summit video goes here, across?

The Great British Wool Revival is an active movement. We host events, teach, and build collaborations between the people who grow British wool and the people who make with it. We work with funders, sponsors and partners to grow that work, through reviving heritage skills, putting value back into rural communities and training the next generation of makers.

How can you work with British Wool?

Traceability, compliance and a story worth telling

Provenance traced back to the flock.
Wool from a mapped British supply chain can be traced back to its breed, flock and region. Customers, and increasingly regulators, are asking for exactly this evidence.

Ready for what's coming. The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is set to bring Digital Product Passports to textiles. Brands selling into the EU will need to show where their materials come from, and a short, onshore supply chain, naturally puts you ahead.

Value back to farmers. Every brand that chooses British wool helps restore value back to the people who grow it.

Sheep breeds

More than 60 pure and native breeds each with its own unique handle, crimp and colour

The British Isles are home to some 60 different pure breeds of sheep and can be up to 90 when considering crossbreeds and composites, this is more than any other country in the world. Each region is steeped in its own history, each breed has its own handle, crimp and character, shaped by the very landscape it grazes. Some, like the seaweed-eating North Ronaldsay, are so rare that if we don't use their wool, we risk losing them. Others like the Bluefaced Leicester are softer and handle better than cashmere. Some wools are soft enough to wear next to the skin; others are hard-wearing enough for upholstery and rugs. There's a British wool for every project.
