Why it happened

Restoring value, and a sense of place, to British wool.

Wool is at its most valuable when it keeps its sense of place. Instead of disappearing into a uniform blend, it can carry its breed, its very landscape and its flock all the way to the finished piece.

The Summit set out to protect that sense of place: to rebuild fibre sovereignty, so that wool grown across our regions is valued, processed and worn here at home, and to champion place-based learning. Involving next-generation designers is key to the woollen industry's future, which is why students and designers sat alongside farmers, makers and policymakers in the room.

It was delivered in line with King Charles III's Philosophy of Harmony, which sees everything in nature as interconnected, including ourselves – encouraging us to see ourselves as part of nature, not apart from her. This means taking a holistic approach to the challenges facing our planet, and looking to solve these challenges by working with nature. By putting this into practice, we are creating more of a sustainable future for both ourselves and the natural world. It aligned with the Dumfries House Wool Declaration of 2016, ensuring key players from shepherds to shop owners commit to protecting the environment.

Capturing the day

Two days, one value chain, under one roof.

Over two days in May 2026, designers, researchers, farmers, educators, manufacturers and policymakers gathered at Dumfries House, the headquarters of The King's Foundation.

The Summit opened with a dedicated Education Day, welcoming students, academics and emerging talent into conversations on textile innovation, circularity, craft preservation and regenerative systems thinking. The following day, Industry Day brought the whole value chain together, from clip to consumer, as senior figures from across fashion and wool took on the challenges and opportunities facing British wool production, supply chains, manufacturing and consumer engagement.

What we explored

  • The future of regenerative fashion and fibre systems

  • Rebuilding British textile manufacturing and regional skills

  • Wool innovation and material research

  • Education and pathways into craft and textile industries

  • Circular business models and resale ecosystems

  • The role of natural fibres within sustainable luxury

  • Cross-sector collaboration between agriculture, fashion and policy

The Impact

What the Summit, and the Revival, have set in motion.

Since launching in September 2024, the Great British Wool Revival has engaged 650 stakeholders and is active in 80 countries, bringing increased visibility for British wool, wider industry participation and renewed conversations around localised textile economies and rural craftsmanship.

"A decade on from the signing of the Dumfries House Wool Declaration, the successful Great British Wool Revival Summit has decisively cemented the close collaboration between farmers and the fashion industry that is key to British wool's long-term, sustainable future. The innovative two-part summit, including the 'clip-to-consumer' Industry Day, brought the entire value chain together, setting a clear path to sustain the momentum created by wool's recent ten-year high in price."

Ashleigh Douglas, Future Textiles Manager, The King's Foundation at Dumfries House

"The inaugural Great British Wool Revival summit at Dumfries House, the headquarters of The King's Foundation, was the first clip-to-consumer event of its kind, bringing the entire value chain from farmers to designers under one roof. It felt so special to see the connection restored between farming and design and to see networks being revived and in many cases created. A truly wonderful event."
